Loss Prevention – Are you
prepared?
Daytime Crimes… Shoplifting, Grab and Runs, Messenger and Armed
Robberies!
Did you know that most losses occur when a business is open? Well,
the truth is, more than half of the claims submitted against a
jewelers block policy consist of shoplifting, grab and run thefts,
messenger losses, and armed robberies. So now we understand that
these are common losses that can occur during business hours… What
can we do to prevent these?
Good question! Actually, over 60% of jewelry related losses can be
prevented. Here are some recommendations to consider that may help
you prevent these types of losses. Share this information with your
employees.
Open & Close Tips!
1. Don’t be so predictable… Change the time and route you take when
going to and from work, the bank and lunch.
2. Never open and close your store alone; you are simply asking for
trouble.
3. Keep your doors locked before you are open and while you are
closing your store.
4. Only when your doors are locked should you begin putting away
merchandise in the safes and/or displaying merchandise in the
showcases.
5. Avoid opening your doors to anyone unless they are an employee
while opening or closing your store. Robbers are known to dress in
uniforms, such as UPS, Federal Express or the Postal Service.
Security Measures!
1. Install pick-resistant locks on all showcases.
2. Secure showcase glass with metal clips and adhesive.
3. Several times during the day inspect your showcases to be sure
they haven’t been tampered with.
4. Always keep your display cases and windows locked during business
hours.
5. Consider a buzzer system to let customers in and out or have a
chime system to alert you when a customer enters the stores and
leaves.
6. Install a one way mirror in your store.
7. Arrange your floor plan so that you and all employees have a
clear view of the entire showroom.
8. If possible, don’t display all of your high value items in one
place. Distribute these items throughout the stores in strategic
areas that are away from your entrance. Excess high value items
should be locked in a drawer to remain out of sight during an armed
robbery. Have your own secret hiding place.
9. Don’t have a public restroom.
10. Install holdup buttons, including wireless. Educate your
employees how and when to use them. Have a few holdup buttons in
lower places in the event you are asked to drop to the floor, even
consider having one in the restroom.
11. Have a surveillance camera system with a recording device.
